NY Armory Art Show, 2009

This past Saturday afternoon, while enjoying the 50 degree weather, I went to the NYC Armory show at Pier 92 and 94, something I have been meaning to do for years. It was an amazing and overwhelming art day. The large daunting piers were filled to capacity with works, and with the opening of a new modern section on pier 92, hosting "70 dealers [that] offer modern masters and historically significant contemporary art" (according to flavorpill), there was juxtaposition of names like Marcel Duchamp to young "up-and-coming artists" still in undergraduate study. While the art was wide in range, so were the spectators, and one of my first real-world experiences with art dealer to art buyer conversations. Fascinating.

Most interesting of the show I thought, was the eerie, dark theme that seemed to encompass numerous unrelated pieces. Some of my favorites in particular were the peculiar, isolation-themed photographs of destroyed lands. Many works left me with the same sense of confusion, the same one would feel after watching a horror movie trailer, when you don't know the ending but can probably take a pretty good guess.

Below are various pieces that caught my eye, as well as my favorite of the pencil drawings, "Fetal Offering." It was innocent and eye-catching, yet bizarre.
