Touchable Holography

This is a fascinating article by Technology Review, worth reading/watching, about work that was featured this past weekend at ACM's Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques, SIGGRAPH 2009, in New Orleans.

The concept of Touchable Holography was what caught my eye, as I have noticed a huge influx in the use of holograms, in combination with web cams, in print advertising (see my earlier blog on solar wind power). This idea, however, takes the concept one giant, progressive leap forward. The article explains that the holograms have a sensation of touch due to the use of an ultrasound device positioned below it.

Does anyone else feel like we are almost to the point of Space Odyssey?
