I predict that sites like flavors.me will be the next big thing that takes over social networking and web design. As I work on redesigns and constantly think about upgrading and adapting my own portfolio site to the changing world of interfaces, coupled with smart phones becoming the norm and web simplicity increasingly popular, I see more and more the lack of hand crafted and programmed portfolio sites, and instead sites that generate content from various blog-like links, formats, and templates. For example, flavors.me pulls in anything you link to it, so if you are a designer and link a blog, twitter, and flickr, where is the need for a portfolio site? Especially when you can customize the html? This makes me wonder if the next thing in programming is not actually programming, but adaptability. Learning how to make other programmers’ creations work for your needs, instead of learning to be that programmer.
Interesting options so far:
Flavors
Carbon Made
Indexhibit
Cargo
My next big project is to tackle my own site’s upgrade, but instead of the normal programming of images and layouts, I want to use the technology in front of me and see what I wonders can be created by adapting to the world around me.
